A Prayer for Independence Day

Dearest and most gracious God,
I thank you for my nation and the freedoms that it values.
Thank you for those throughout our history who have helped to keep our legacy of freedom. Forgive us for abusing our liberties; by forgetting the sacrifices people have given throughout the centuries and millenia so that they might be free of oppression and tyranny.
Even today we hear the cries of the oppressed.

Help us to remember the principles upon which our nation was built;
A nation built on the principles of religious freedom; a nation built so that we have freedom of expression and speech; a nation built so that we are free to earn a decent wage and live a life of freedom.

However, Lord, we remember above all, the freedom that comes from deliverance from the bondage of sin, won for us by Jesus Christ.
With Christ we are free, indeed.
In Christ's name we pray, Amen.
