Pray For Peace

Pray to whomever you kneel down to:
Jesus nailed to his wooden or plastic cross,
his suffering face bent to kiss you,
Buddha still under the bo tree in scorching heat,
Adonai, Allah. Raise your arms to Mary
that she may lay her palm on our brows,
to Shekhina, Queen of Heaven and Earth,
to Inanna in her stripped descent.

Then pray to the bus driver who takes you to work.
On the bus, pray for everyone riding that bus,
for everyone riding buses all over the world.
Drop some silver and pray.

Waiting in line for the movies, for the ATM,
for your latte and croissant, offer your plea.
Make your eating and drinking a supplication.
Make your slicing of carrots a holy act,
each translucent layer of the onion, a deeper prayer.

To Hawk or Wolf, or the Great Whale, pray.
Bow down to terriers and shepherds and Siamese cats.
Fields of artichokes and elegant strawberries.

Make the brushing of your hair
a prayer, every strand its own voice,
singing in the choir on your head.
As you wash your face, the water slipping
through your fingers, a prayer: Water,
softest thing on earth, gentleness
that wears away rock.

Making love, of course, is already prayer.
Skin, and open mouths worshipping that skin,
the fragile cases we are poured into.

If you're hungry, pray. If you're tired.
Pray to Gandhi and Dorothy Day.
Shakespeare. Sappho. Sojourner Truth.

When you walk to your car, to the mailbox,
to the video store, let each step
be a prayer that we all keep our legs,
that we do not blow off anyone else's legs.
Or crush their skulls.
And if you are riding on a bicycle
or a skateboard, in a wheelchair, each revolution
of the wheels a prayer as the earth revolves:
less harm, less harm, less harm.

And as you work, typing with a new manicure,
a tiny palm tree painted on one pearlescent nail
or delivering soda or drawing good blood
into rubber-capped vials, writing on a blackboard
with yellow chalk, twirling pizzas--

With each breath in, take in the faith of those
who have believed when belief seemed foolish,
who persevered. With each breath out, cherish.

Pull weeds for peace, turn over in your sleep for peace,
feed the birds, each shiny seed
that spills onto the earth, another second of peace.
Wash your dishes, call your mother, drink wine.

Shovel leaves or snow or trash from your sidewalk.
Make a path. Fold a photo of a dead child
around your VISA card. Scoop your holy water
from the gutter. Gnaw your crust.
Mumble along like a crazy person, stumbling
your prayer through the streets.

The Dance

In the beginning, there was dance. The Spirit of God hovered over the water. The author of all creation danced with the Spirit and the Word, which sang let there be light, let there be...let there be...Divine, everlasting community said let us create adam --earth creature--male and female, in our image, reflecting our creative, communal dance with one another and it was so. An entire interrelational universe freely became through the power of persuasive, divine, creative, loving community, integrating spirit and matter, and it was good.

Sunday Prayer

I enjoy reading Anne Lamott's reflections on life and faith. One of my favourites is her clarity and wisdom around the mysterious ongoing conversation we have with the Holy ~ prayer.

Lamott believes that most prayer can be summed up in this way: Thank You & Help.

God, thank you. God, help. Amen.

I'll invite you to fill in the blanks of gratitude and intercession as they present themselves in your life today.

Peace be with you, friends.

2fer1 Saturday

Morning Prayer (Written by Dr. Martin Luther)

We give thanks to you, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have protected us through the night from all danger and harm. We ask you to preserve and keep us, this day also, from all sin and evil, that in all our thoughts, words, and deeds we may serve and please you. Into your hands we commend our bodies and souls and all that is ours. Let your holy angels have charge of us, that the wicked one have no power over us.
Amen

A Prayer For Quiet Confidence

God of peace, who has taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength by the might of your Spirit lift us, we pray you, to your presence, where we may be still and know that you are God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. -- Book of Common Prayer

Gone fishing

One evening during our mission trip to Alabama last week, our group went out on a shrimp boat. When the nets were pulled in and their contents dumped out, the whole group went to work sorting the catch. This came quickly to mind:

Walking along the beach of Lake Galilee, Jesus saw two brothers: Simon (later called Peter) and Andrew. They were fishing, throwing their nets into the lake. It was their regular work. Jesus said to them, "Come with me. I'll make a new kind of fisherman out of you. I'll show you how to catch men and women instead of perch and bass." They didn't ask questions, but simply dropped their nets and followed.

A Prayer of St. Augustine

Lord our God, all that we have you have given us.
Give us peace, the peace of tranquillity,
the peace of your Sabbath rest,
the peace without sunset.
For this most beautiful order of things so excellent
will complete its course and pass away;
it will have its sunset as it had its dawn.
But your Sabbath knows no evening or sunset
because you have sanctified it to last forever.
May we too share in your Sabbath rest of unending life.

Psalm 63

O God, You are my God; early will I seek you; my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh longs for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water.

So have I looked for you in the sanctuary, to see Your power and your glory.
Because your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise you.

Thus will I bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.
My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise you with joyful lips.

When I remember You upon my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches.
Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.
My soul follows close behind You; your right hand upholds me.

But those who seek my life to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
They shall fall by the sword; they shall be a portion for jackals.

But the ruler shall rejoice in God; everyone who swears by God shall glory;
but the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.

Glory to God: Lover, Beloved and Love;
As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

John Wesley on Prayer

God's command to "pray without ceasing" is founded on the necessity we have of his grace to preserve the life of God in the soul, which can no more subsist one moment without it, than the body can without air.

Whether we think of; or speak to, God, whether we act or suffer for him, all is prayer, when we have no other object than his love, and the desire of pleasing him.

All that a Christian does, even in eating and sleeping, is prayer, when it is done in simplicity, according to the order of God, without either adding to or diminishing from it by his own choice.

Prayer continues in the desire of the heart, though the understanding be employed on outward things.

In souls filled with love, the desire to please God is a continual prayer.

As the furious hate which the devil bears us is termed the roaring of a lion, so our vehement love may be termed crying after God.

God only requires of his adult children, that their hearts be truly purified, and that they offer him continually the wishes and vows that naturally spring from perfect love. For these desires, being the genuine fruits of love, are the most perfect prayers that can spring from it.

From "A Plain Account of Christian Perfection", as believed and taught by the Reverend Mr. John Wesley, from the year 1725, to the year 1777.

And, of course, the Wesleyan Covenant Prayer:

I am no longer my own but yours,
Put me to what you will
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be employed for you or laid aside for you.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to Your pleasure and disposal
And now glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
You are mine and I am yours. So be it.
And this covenant now made on earth, let it be satisfied in heaven.

Amen

Spirit of Love

Spirit of Love

Spirit of love
that flows against our flesh
Sets it trembling
Moves across it as across grass
Erasing every boundary that we accept
And swings the doors of our lives wide—
This is a prayer I sing:
Save our perishing earth!

Spirit that cracks our singles selves –
Eyes fall down eyes,
Hearts escape through the bars of our ribs
To dart into other bodies—
Save this earth!
The Earth is perishing
This is a prayer I sing.

Spirit that hears each one of us,
Hears all that is—
Listens, listens, hears us out—
Inspire us now!
Our own pulse beats in every stranger’s throat,
And also there within the flowered ground beneath our feet,
And-teach us to listen!-
We can hear it in water, in wood, and even in stone.
We earth of this earth, and we are bone of its bone.
This is a prayer I sing, for we have forgotten this and so
The earth is perishing.

A Tried and True Morning Prayer

Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day: Preserve us with your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thursday July 19th

Father on this the RevGals' second Birthday we thank you that this has been such a safe haven for so many women in - and on the fringes of - ministry. We ask that You continue to give us ears and eyes to hear and see what You are doing in Rev Gals and the courage to run with it!

I declare that when we lack wisdom, we can ask in faith and it is given to us generously. I ask that You Father God make this true in each of our lives. You give us every spiritual blessing - help us to set aside our own building plans and build Your Kingdom wherever we are for Your glory.

And the women of God and their friends said

Amen

From the BCP, for the Unity of the Church

Almighty Father,
whose blessed Son before his passion prayed for his disciples
that they might be one,
as you and he are one:
Grant that your Church,
being bound together in love and obedience to you,
may be united in one body by the one Spirit,
that the world may believe in him whom you have sent,
your Son Jesus Christ our Lord;
who lives and reigns with you, in
the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Tuesday Prayer

Someone once said that God can dream a bigger dream for us than we can dream for ourselves. Keeping that in mind, begin and end each day with this prayer or one like it: God of my future, show me the vision toward which you are leading me.

Monday Morning Grace

A Collect for Grace

O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God,
who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day:
Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that
this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of
danger; but that we, being ordered by thy governance, may
do always what is righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.

Saturday Late Night

In the name of the King of life;
in the name of the Christ of love;
in the name of the Holy Spirit:
the Triune of my strength.

I love you, O Lord my strength.
The Lord is my rock,
my fortress and my deliverer.
My God is my rock
in whom I take refuge.
I will praise the Lord who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
I have set the Lord always before me.
Because He is at my right hand,
I shall not be shaken.

I am placing my soul and my body
under Thy guarding this night, O Christ.
May Thy cross this night be shielding me.

Into Your hands I commit my spirit;
redeem me, O Lord, the God of Truth.

The God of life with guarding hold you;
the loving Christ with guarding fold you;
the Holy Spirit, guarding, mould you;
each night of life to aid, enfold you;
each day and night of life uphold you.

May God shield me;
may God fill me;
may God keep me;
may God watch me;
may God bring me this night
to the nearness of His love.

The peace of the Father of joy,
the peace of the Christ of hope,
the peace of the Spirit of grace,

the peace of all peace
be mine this night
+ in the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Sunday Prayer

MY LORD GOD, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

- Thomas Merton, "Thoughts in Solitude"

Amen.

A Prayer For Procrastinators

Loving and gracious God: Some of your friends have told me that we live our lives in the tension between the “now” and the “not yet.” Well, I live in the self-inflicted tension of “Not yet…not yet…not yet…” Sometimes it’s because I’m afraid of failing. Sometimes it’s because I’m afraid of succeeding. Sometimes it’s because…well, sometimes I don’t even know why. But it’s worrying, and tiring, and sometimes it’s inconveniencing or even hurtful to others. Please help me, and my emotional kinfolk, get “unstuck,” wherever we are, so we can be about the business of living you into the world around us. In Jesus’ name. Amen

Prayer of Saint Francis

Lord make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
And where there is sadness, joy.

O divine master grant that I may
not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love
For it's in giving that we receive—
and it's in pardoning that we are pardoned.
And it's in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen.

St. Patrick's Breastplate

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.
By Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

Reunion

Blessed are those who travel far
to find each other
to hear the stories
to renew the friendships kept protected through the years.

Blessed are those who travel near
to see the changes
to sing the songs
to affirm the love that holds on through the years.

Blessed are those who open their doors
to prepare the way
to invite the travelers
to welcome all who come this way, now and through the years.

Bless this gathering
bless this reunion
bless each one
through the years
through the years

Song of Songs

You have ravished my heart, my sister, my bride, you have ravished my heart with a glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace. How sweet is your love, my sister, my bride! how much better is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your oils than any spice! Your lips distill nectar, my bride; honey and milk are under your tongue; the scent of your garments is like the scent of Lebanon....

Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind! Blow upon my garden that its fragrance may be wafted abroad. Let my beloved come to his garden, and eat its choicest fruits. I come to my garden, my sister, my bride; I gather my myrrh with my spice, I eat my honeycomb with my honey, I drink my wine with my milk. Eat, friends, drink, and be drunk with love.

Song of Songs 4:9-11, 4:16-5.

Sunday Prayer

For the next eight Sundays I will not be preaching and will therefore not be preparing lectionary-themed pastoral prayers as I usually do. Instead, I will post the prayerful wisdom of the ages as the Spirit so moves.

These words are from Julian of Norwich.

God, of your goodness, give me yourself. For you are enough for me. And I may ask nothing that is less, that may be of honour to you. And if I ask anything that is less, I am always in want. For only in you I have all. Amen.

Saturday; A Prayer for Healing

Dear God,
Be my redeemer, my internal teacher, my divine physician.
Thank You for your presence in my life.

I surrender to You all I am, all I think, all I feel, and all I have.
I recognize in this moment that Yours is the power to heal and make whole.
You who have the power to work miracles,
You who rule time and space, please take me in Your arms and hold me.

Dear Lord, please lift me up and heal me.
Cast out of my mind all thoughts that are not of You.
Cast out of me all harsh and critical nature.
Cast out of me all violence and all anger.
Cast out of me all demons from my past.
For I would be made new.

I wish to walk so close to You that we might be as one.
I ask for new life, new mind, new body, new spirit.
Dear God, please come into me and release me from this pain.
Amen.

Opportunities

If someone prays for patience, you think God gives her patience, or does God give her the opportunity to be patient?
If she prays for courage, does God give her courage, or does God give her opportunities to be courageous?
If someone prays for their family to be closer, do you think God zaps them with warm fuzzy feelings, or does God give them opportunities to love each other?

Thanksgiving

O God, I begin this morning grateful for your blessings but aware that many of my sisters and brothers are suffering today.

I am surrounded by the love of family and friends, while others are lonely and hurting.

I have every material thing I need, while others are hungry and homeless.

I enjoy good health, while others are sick and suffering.

I begin this day with joy, while others grieve.

I am thankful for all that I have, and I pray that you will not let me become complacent. Help me to grow in compassion through my prayers for all of your children, and make me aware of every opportunity that comes my way today to reach out to others or to act on their behalf, hoping and trusting that on another day when I am the one in need, they may do the same for me.

Amen.

A Prayer for Independence Day

Dearest and most gracious God,
I thank you for my nation and the freedoms that it values.
Thank you for those throughout our history who have helped to keep our legacy of freedom. Forgive us for abusing our liberties; by forgetting the sacrifices people have given throughout the centuries and millenia so that they might be free of oppression and tyranny.
Even today we hear the cries of the oppressed.

Help us to remember the principles upon which our nation was built;
A nation built on the principles of religious freedom; a nation built so that we have freedom of expression and speech; a nation built so that we are free to earn a decent wage and live a life of freedom.

However, Lord, we remember above all, the freedom that comes from deliverance from the bondage of sin, won for us by Jesus Christ.
With Christ we are free, indeed.
In Christ's name we pray, Amen.

Ephesians 4:1-16

1 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.

2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit--just as you were called to one hope when you were called-- 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. 8 This is why it says: "When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to humankind." 9 (What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? 10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Sunday Prayer

Gracious God, we thank you for the blessing of this day and the wonders of creation. We thank you for the mentors and wise ones in our lives who have lit the path for us on our journey of faith.

We thank you for the people who have dared to be honest with us, challenging us to explore deeper and ask the hard questions. We praise you for the gift of the faith we share and the richness found in authentic and healthy relationships.

God, in this season of vacations and retreat, we ask your blessing on all who travel and all who seek a time of retreat and renewal. May your blessing be upon us all in our summer activities.

Compassionate God, we ask your blessing on all who suffer in body, mind or spirit this day. Grant the assuring presence of the Spirit to those who need encouragement, comfort and strength. All this we ask in the name of the One who came that we might be blessed, this day and every day, Jesus Christ….who taught us to pray together saying…

Amen.
